Best Vertical Broiler: Making Gyros, Shawarma and Kebab at Home

vertical-broiler

If you like kebabs or gyros, you need to be using a vertical broiler. A vertical broiler will change the way you cook gyros forever. And this isn’t just a way to hype the vertical broiler. If you’ve never had the pleasure of cooking meat on a vertical broiler, there is a major advantage to these broilers over the traditional models.

What’s truly unique with these models is how the grease from meat drips down vertically.

The grease is allowed to drip down off the meat, which eliminates all the grease from the meat. Most cooks think this is a bad thing, but none of the moisture or crispiness is lost in the process, which is a dream come true for a kebab lover.

When the fats start to drip down the food, this also adds the bonus of being able to further marinate the meat. A good example of this is that the marinade will also drip down the meat, allowing it to absorb more of the marinade than normal. You’ll experience a richer taste, and the entire piece of meat is far juicer than what you’d get with a horizontal boiler.

You can place pineapple on top of the spit, and the juices will flow down the meat during the entire time cooking.

You can use the vertical broiler to add spices or marinades to the top of the meat and allow it to drip down the side of the meat while the pineapple, or any other item, caramelizes over time, which tastes delicious.

The Best Vertical Broiler: Autodoner 3PGM-LP

autodoner-3pg-lp

The Autodoner 3PGM-LP is an automatic broiler that features durable stainless steel and weighs a staggering 63 pounds. Designed to make one of the best gyros you’ll ever eat, this unit’s dimensions are:

  • Height: 32.5”
  • Length: 17”
  • Width: 17”

Easy to clean and use, this model is similar to the other we will review, but the one difference is simple, and crucial: it has a 30-pound capacity.

You read that correctly.

You can cook up 30 pounds of meat at one time with this broiler, and this is a ton of meat. In a commercial setting, this unit excels.

Liquid propane is used to heat up the single burner, and it’s designed for small-to-medium cones. All the needed accessories are included with this unit, and the electrical component is responsible for turning your meat to ensure that it’s cooked evenly.

There is a drip pan to catch all your meat’s drippings.

Easy to clean, the hardest part of the cleaning process is moving the unit. The weight of 63 pounds makes this a heavy vertical broiler, but this is what you want in a commercial-grade unit.

Pros

  • Designed to last, with high-end stainless steel
  • Utilizes liquid propane for heating
  • Holds 30 pounds of meat at one time

Cons

  • You get what you pay for… too pricey for some.

This is an expensive vertical broiler, and it is meant for a commercial setting. You may find it high priced, but it really doesn’t get any better than this model.

Review: Spinning Grillers 5 in 1 Vertical Broiler

spinning-grillers-vertical-broiler

The Spinning Grillers is my all-time favorite vertical broiler. This model is the right choice for a backyard party, and it’s even used for light catering in some cases. This model features a 5-in-1 design:

  • Gyro
  • Donar
  • Kebab
  • Tacos
  • Shawarma

This is a vertical rotisserie / kebab grill that utilizes propane for heat. This model even has a 3-side skewer and a catch pan to catch all those excess juices.

Easy to clean, this model comes fully assembled.

Two burners are incorporated into the boiler with a stainless-steel design. The unit weighs just 21 pounds, and the dimensions are 15.8” x 11” x 21”.

Users will find that this model can cook 2 – 20 pounds of meat at one time. This is a massive amount of meat, and if you’re having a party, twenty pounds of meat is more than enough to grill up at one time.

Easy to use, for optimal tasty results at home.

Ceramic gas burners will allow for even, long-lasting heating to cook your food to perfection.

Propane will cook the meat, while electric is responsible for rotating the unit to allow for even cooking. A conversion kit is offered if you want to use natural gas to provide the heat source rather than propane.

The juices that drip from the meat will fall into the big catch pan to ensure easy cleanup.

If you’re looking for a single unit that can help you cook everything from kebabs to even small chickens, this is the model for you.

Pros

  • Offers a 5-in-1 device for versatile cooking
  • Rotates to cook the meat evenly
  • Cooks 2 – 20 pounds of meat at one time

Cons

  • Natural gas requires a conversion kit

Your only source of heat is the unit’s propane function unless you want to purchase a gas conversion kit. The conversion kit is an added cost, so it’s not as practical.

Review: Autodoner 3PEM-120V Mini Vertical Broiler

mini-vertical-broiler-for-doner

The Autodoner is a mini vertical broiler, and it’s designed to make mouth-watering gyros. The unit runs off 120V of power, and the stainless steel design allows the unit to be cleaned with ease.

The unit’s dimensions are:

  • Weight: 25 pounds
  • Height: 20.5”
  • Length: 11”
  • Width: 12”

So, while the dimensions are small, you can see by the weight of the boiler that it’s constructed with a full metal design and is durable as a result.

Powered with 14 amps, this unit is designed for small cones. Ideal for home use, this vertical boiler can also be found in small restaurants and cafes – even in delis.

Commercial-grade, this broiler can cook up 12 pounds of meat with ease.

The unit features a metal skewer that allows for meat, up to 12 pounds, to be placed on the unit and cooked. There are two, side-by-side broilers to ensure that the meat is cooked from all angles.

It only takes a flip of a button to start the broiler, and there is a button that can be pressed to start rotating the food, too.

What’s nice about this unit, besides being easy to clean, is that you don’t need gas or propane to operate it. So, if you want to cook up a gyro in the middle of winter, you can do so in the comfort and warmth of your home.

But, there is a different flavor when cooking with propane that a lot of people prefer.

Pros

  • Includes all the accessories needed to start broiling
  • Plugs right into the electrical outlet
  • Very easy to clean with an included drip pan

Cons

  • 12-pound broil limit

The limit for meat that can be broiled in this unit is 12 pounds, so while it states it’s a commercial unit, it doesn’t broil enough meat for a large establishment.

With that said, for home use, this unit can broil enough meat for even a large family gathering, which is a nice added perk.

Conclusion

These are my three favorite vertical broilers, and there is one among my list that will fit into your cooking style and budget.

Just remember to do your own research and choose a model that meets your cooking needs the best.
